Dragons

I see them as a unclassifiable species, they are not avian, they are not mammal, they are not reptile. They are a mix of all of these types of animals as they have traits from all.

I see them as clever, talking creatures. They are as clever as humans, and can talk and express emotions just like us. But still at the end of the day they are also animals. Therefore, in my world Dragons have mating grounds for when its mating session, and settle things with fights.

My dragons also have various diets, some are carnivores others are herbivores etc.
I see their body shape as variable, dependant on habitat, such as marsh, snow, tropical forest... they all have body differences that help them adapt to where they live.

ALL my dragons have human like skin, but under this is a sheet of strong, flexable skin, almost like a natural and biological sheet of armour.

Dragons eyesight varies on species, but as a rule of thumb its sharp, clear and can also switch to heat vision when they hunt (a sheath, or film of skin covers the iris, which allows them to see heat)

My dragons live in caves but also burrows and sometimes even just out in the open. It depends on what species they are.
Sand dragons, for example simply sleep above ground.
Shadow dragons prefer dark, cool burrows.
Black dragons live in caves high in the mountains.

Do all dragons breath fire? In my world.. no. some do not have a breath attack, some are purely based on physical attacks. This would include the Sloth dragon, which uses its massive claws to fight. Nitro dragons use acidic spits, and lazar back dragons use (you guessed it) a lazar beam.

My dragons also have basic dragon behavours, they preen one another, head bob when they are excited. They lick each others snouts, which is the same as a human kiss and show affection by nuzzling. They also Flare wings and fins to look bigger and more imposing when they are scared, and even grow extra tassels and markings when its mating time.

Family groups are not uncommon, and they are often in "pods" together. Some species like to be alone, of course like the snow dragon. But others, like the marsh dragon thrive on having their family around them.

They often mate for life. BUT this is  Dependant on the species, All dragons display in the same way;
They will roar, and throw out their brightly coloured wings whist showing off their weapons (long spiked tail perhaps, or bulky muscles) to the prospective mate. If she (or he) likes the male, then they will approach the other and bow, before spreading their wings and taking flight.
The other will follow, and in the air they will do a dramatic dance, spinning and twisting around one another before they fly as high as they can, grab hold of one another.. and then freefall from the sky head first. The pair hold on, and hold on... until they are moments from the ground. They separate at this point, scotching the ground with their flames before landing together to mate.

Dragons snort to show displeasure, purr to show love and affection, and also use their ears (f they have them) to show many emotions. Pricked forward being alert and happy of course, back and flat against the skull being angry or aggressive.
